Nabaztag: the wireless rabbit

Posted on: 08 Jan 2010

OK, now you may look at the title of this post and think that I have lost it but keep with me!

I am infact talking about this little critter:

He is the afore mentioned Nabaztag and is a very cool little device created by Violet. The Nabaztag is Wi-Fi enabled and connects to the internet via your wireless network, once connected the Nabaztag can perform a whole host of internet tasks such as: reading out a news or RSS feed, notifying you when you have a new email or even wiggling it's ears when someone visits your site (not advised for high traffic sites!).

Along with the Nabaztag, there is the mir:ror & the nano:ztag -

(the mir:ror is the white disc shaped object and the little rabbits are the nano:ztags)

These are slightly different from the Nabaztag, the mir:ror is an RFID reader & the nano:ztags contain programmable RFID chips. The nano:ztags can be programmed to perform an event on your PC when they are placed onto the mir:ror - these events can be anything from: locking your computer to sending a twitter update.

Personally, I think that the aesthetics of the different products is spot on and especially with the nano:ztags, these micro rabbits offer a relatively new and emerging technology in something which has quite a broad visual appeal.

I am currently working on a project which aims to create a game utilizing both the nano:ztags & the Nabaztag. The project will make use of the API for the Nabaztag however as of yet there is no API for the nano:ztag which is making my job all the more challenging!

I look forward to hearing about it. I've had a Nabaztag for a few months now, and lately all he does is give me [very general] weather forecasts and tell me when I need to head out the door in the morning to catch the bus (simple scheduled announcements. There's no tracking of the busses). I'm working on a way to have it update a database for me, initiated by an RFID chip and influenced by its ear position, but I'm not sure that will work yet. I'm always trying to think of ways to make it as functional as it is cute. Good luck.
